How to Have a Harmonious Divorce

A strong advocate for alternative dispute resolution, K J Smith Senior Chartered Legal Executive, Sofie Corbin, is eager to bust some of the myths surrounding separation and shares some key steps for embarking on a successful divorce.

"There's a huge misconception with divorce that getting lawyers involved means things have to get nasty but that's not the case. I've had what could be described as a 'successful divorce' and have learnt through my own experience that there's no 'one-size-fits-all approach' it's about taking the right advice from the right person at the right time."

Key steps for embarking on a successful separation

Take time to grieve
It is very rare that both parties in a relationship make the joint decision to separate and, even in those cases, one party has usually been thinking about it for longer than the other and may have already come to terms with the decision. Whether or not the idea of separation is a shock to you, it takes time to process and grieve the relationship. So, take your time

Come with a list of questions
Once you've made the decision to seek advice from a solicitor, think about what you would like to get out of that first meeting. We offer a 45-minute free consultation and sometimes that's just about having a cup of tea and us listening to you. But, if you’re able to come with some questions, that can be particularly helpful for the process.

Talk about the other person
You may not want to – or be in a place where you feel able to – talk about your husband, wife or partner. However, it can really help us to understand a little about what the other party is like so we can help you navigate the journey of divorce or separation better.

Be committed to the process
It can be difficult, particularly when a separation has not been instigated by you, but being committed to the process will help the process run more smoothly. But it's your case and your prerogative to be as proactive or reactive as you want. We're here to listen, support and guide you through the challenges.
