K J Smith Solicitors launch free ‘Figuring out Family’ workshop for children

K J Smith Solicitors are very excited to announce the launch of our free workshops for children. Over the past few months we have been working closely with accredited children’s coach and founder of Bright Minds Positive Mindset Coaching Storm Copestake, in order to develop a workshop to support children whose parents are going through divorce or separation.

Storm is passionate about the moral, intellectual and social development of children, having trained at The Kids Life Coach Academy. She loves helping children through anxiety and equipping them with the right tools to make positive life choices in an increasingly challenging world. The aim of our workshops is to provide children with a safe environment to discuss their thoughts and feelings, and provide them with tools and strategies to help them with managing the changes they are experiencing.

They are interactive workshops where artwork, games, discussions and role playing are all used to help children understand and cope with the changes taking place at home.

The workshops, titled ‘Figuring out Family’, are free of charge to our existing clients and will be run at regular intervals throughout the year. Two workshops will run on Saturdays, with a morning workshop for children aged 6-9 years and an afternoon workshop for children aged between 10-13 years. Storm will speak to the parents of the children who attend before and after the workshops, so although they are group sessions they are adapted to ensure they meet each child’s individual needs.

Each child is also given a kit bag at the end of the workshop containing toys and games played during the workshop to help them use the techniques they have learnt when they get home.

What are the workshop goals?

• To provide children with a safe and confidential environment to discuss their feelings
• Letting children know that they are not alone and that the divorce is not their fault
• Giving children practical skills and tools to handle common divorce scenarios to help them adjust to family changes
• Discussing any questions they have and setting age appropriate expectations for the legal process
• Providing ongoing support so that they feel supported and have someone to talk to when they need it
