On Saturday 28th January the team from the K J Smith Solicitors Henley on Thames office took time out to show their support for the Guildford Flames Ice Hockey team; whom K J Smith proudly sponsor.
The match itself was a brutal encounter. The Flames were on top throughout, having more shots on goal than their opponents in each of the 3 periods of play as well as the overtime, but never established a lead. In fact quite the opposite occurred; after a goalless first period of play (which was far from a dull draw) the Steeldogs showed their metal and ruthlessly took a 2 goal lead. Rather than be down heartened the Flames rallied in the third period of play to score twice to level the match.
In Ice Hockey a level match must go one way and overtime began with the Flames lighting up the ice with 5 further fantastic attempts on goal that had the crowd jumping out of their seats over and over again but to no avail and a shootout was necessary. A shootout was possibly the perfect way to end this evening of drama…a nail biting finish. The Flames eventually coming out on top of the shootout 3-2 winners. The match was not without its disputes, with 13 penalty periods enforced by the referees with time on the side-lines varying from 2 minutes for minor offences to 20 minutes for player misconduct.
I myself am pleased my day job is not quite as physically demanding as the Flames players and I am glad the height of my drama comes in the local county court rather than on the ice.
